Make your story authentic not perfect

Should you use AI to help tell your story? It’s a good question and one that was raised at a storytelling workshop I ran recently.

AI has useful applications, as a research assistant that can organise your raw materials. It can order your thinking. But I caution against using AI to craft your story because when you’re sharing a personal story, we need raw and real. It has to give us the feeling that it’s come from our hearts, not from a machine.

At my talk at the Do Lectures this month I veered off my prepared material, I choked up with emotion, I dropped F-bombs. It was a long way from perfection.

If it had been perfect it would have squashed all the emotion out of it. So when you’re telling your personal story - and being vulnerable with it - keep the mess and raw edges, and leave the polish behind.
